Bangladesh lifts 80 lakh people out of poverty in 6 years: World Bank

Shawdesh desk:

Some 80 lakh people in Bangladesh came out of poverty in six years between 2010 and 2016 mostly driven by labour income, says a new World Bank report.

The global financial institution came up with the statement, while launching a report, Bangladesh Poverty Assessment, at a hotel in Dhaka on Monday.

In the rural areas, 90 per cent of the poverty reduction took place whereas situation in the urban areas remained the same as before in the given timeline, the WB report said.

The report showed robust economic growth continued reducing poverty, but at a slower rate.

Since 2010, while the pace of economic growth increased, the rate of poverty reduction declined, the report said.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, who attended the programme as the chief guest, said in his speech that more one crore people will get jobs by 2030 taking down the current poverty rate to 3 per cent.

The government has undertaken need and technology based initiatives to curb inequality, the finance minister added.

Mercy Tembon, World Bank country director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, also spoke in the event.
